I have always been an artist, since a magical moment that is one of my early memories, of drawing a simple train at the kitchen table. After watching my mom do it, she said, ”now you do it.” My second grade teacher apologized to my parents at a school open house one night. “I can’t get him to do anything but draw….”
I had some college training in art at several times in my life, but my primary art training came in high school, from one teacher, mentor and role model. I could be found in the art room there as often as I was allowed.
After two stints in the U. S. Coast Guard amounted to a career, and amongst fatherhood, more stints in construction, in publishing, as a freelance graphic designer, and a couple other technical fields, I returned to art full time in 2009. My trademark scene in my early years was a seascape of a working boat careened on a beach, or aground. That has since extended to harbors, waterfronts scenes and working boats in general. In and around and in addition to stock seascapes, For many more years I did landscapes and the mountain scenery surrounding me in Northern Nevada. Then liberally sprinkle that with still life, portraiture, wildlife and city scenes to round out the subjects in my portfolio. I travel and gather more subject ideas on every trip.
I’m cozy in my western Washington studio now. Just the view of the ever changing weather over out the front windows, over Grays Harbor, is enough to keep me inspired.
